Listwa Kannaval returns for its second year as a signature event on the Lucian Carnival calendar. The event is set to take place On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at The Harbour Club. Created as a platform for documentation, and cultural dialogue, the lecture series seeks to examine the forces that continue to shape Carnival and Saint Lucian identity.
This year’s theme, “Rhythm, Language, and Identity: Does Our Music Define Us?”, invites audiences to consider a compelling question, does music merely reflect who we are, or does it actively shape how we understand ourselves?
The discussion will explore the influence of Saint Lucian music on national identity, tracing its evolution from traditional folk forms and Calypso to Soca and Saint Lucia’s own, Dennery Segment. Particular attention will be given to the role of Kwéyòl in musical expression and the ways in which music functions as a vehicle for storytelling that further leads to cultural preservation.
The featured lecture will be delivered by Saint Lucian scholar Dr. Ronald T. Francis, Lecturer in Linguistics at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. His research on language, culture, and Saint Lucian popular music positions him uniquely to lead this timely discussion.
A panel discussion featuring artists, producers, cultural practitioners, and industry stakeholders will follow, alongside an interactive audience engagement segment designed to encourage reflection and dialogue across generations.
As Carnival continues to evolve, Listwa Kannaval provides an important space to ask deeper questions about Saint Lucia’s cultural identity. It affirms that Carnival is not only something to be celebrated, but also something to be studied, documented, and thoroughly understood.
Patrons can also enjoy an evening of networking and cultural exchange as Saint Lucia comes together to examine the soundtrack of its Carnival story.
