Rooted in Change: Delegates Advocate for a Greener Saint Lucia

In its second year, the Tree Planting Initiative under the Carnival Planning and Management Committee was a resounding success. The delegates of the 2026 instalment of the National Carnival Queen Pageant, stepped into nature at the Millet Bird Sanctuary within the Forest Reserve on Thursday May 14.

The initiative was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Climate Change. The Department of Forestry provided several trees such as mango and papaya among others to be planted. The tree planting initiative reinforces the urgent need for a concentrated effort towards sustainable development among the population.

Sustainability is one of the four key pillars for Lucian Carnival and this initiative, allowed delegates to step out of the pageant domain and into the most tranquil, natural environment in the heart of Saint Lucia.

The 2026 National Carnival Queen delegates embody far more than elegance and intelligence, they represent a new generation of leaders dedicated to inspiring progress, promoting cultural pride, who advocate for causes that uplift communities and protect the environment. As cultural ambassadors of Lucian Carnival, these young women are using their platforms to encourage responsibility, and positive transformation while contributing to the continued development of Saint Lucia.

Eight delegates of this year’s pageant were joined for the initiative by Chairperson of the Carnival Planning and Management Committee, Mrs. Tamara Gibson, Assistant Chief Forestry Officer, Mr. Karl Augustine, sponsors for each of the nine delegates, team members from the Department of Forestry, members of the National Carnival Queen Pageant Committee and the CPMC.

As Lucian Carnival 2026 unfolds under the banner of inclusivity, sustainability, cultural preservation, and responsible enjoyment, initiatives like these reaffirm the CPMC’s commitment to shaping a festival, and a future, that truly reflects the soul of the nation.

The National Carnival Queen Pageant will be held on Saturday, July 4, at the Pavillion on Rodney Bay.  Persons interested in learning more are encouraged to visit www.carnivalsaintlucia.com.
